My mother received a call from a woman who was trying to find me. She claimed she was from a Vancouver company which specializes in finding people.
Apparently a lawyer from Toronto hired them to find me as I am a beneficiary in someone’s will (this person has passed away) and they didn’t have a current address for me.
This woman did not give me any information as to who died. She only cited the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy act, and said that the lawyer was the only one with that information.
I am suspicious because I don’t know anyone who has died recently, and I don’t know anyone at all in the Toronto area (where the lawyer is from). Would a collection agency or law firm resort to deceptive tactics such as this to find me? I have had some credit problems in the past, and still owe some people money. Am I being paranoid for nothing?
Thx for the answers so far… I forgot to add that the woman who called me already knew my previous address, and the year I was born. I did end up giving her my current address.. don’t know now if I should have though. Probably should have just asked for the lawyers info to contact him / her directly!
