Open Question: has anyone else experienced this credit card fraud with american express?

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

I have amex blue. 2 months ago I noticed a charge for 9.98 from a company called ‘paradise web’ located in CA and the transaction details said ‘mobil txt’. i thought that was odd since i didn’t buy any ringtones or anything for my phone, and i have a plan which is not connected to my credit card. i disputed the charge, and amex investigated and refunded me the amount within about 2 weeks.

last week, i noticed another charge, this time for 19.98 from ‘e nat nataliya makovi’ also located in CA and the details said ‘electronics’. now i know for sure i didn’t make any such purchase. at this point i felt like someone in CA had stolen my credit card info (although i’ve never been to CA and I live in PA). so i asked amex to change my number because this is fraud. surprisingly, the rep was trying to discourage me from having them issue me a new card number!

i wonder if this is really a fraud or if amex is just trying to scare people into buying their fraud protection? what do you think?
there is no contact info listed for the companies that made these charges. and i googled the names of the companies, and found other people who had the same fraudulent charges. amex issued a new card number, but i was wondering if anyone knew why so many people are having this problem with the same fraudulent charges.
